Southern Cross Club Hosts 17th Annual Sister Islands Cook-Off

Once again Team Southern Cross sweeps awards and comes out on top as 2014 Grand Champion; Culinary event keeps gaining momentum

Little Cayman, Cayman Islands (Dec 1, 2014) – Cayman’s top chefs gathered at the Southern Cross Club on Little Cayman on Saturday, November 15, 2014 for the annual Sister Islands Cook-off, the primary fundraiser for the Sister Islands Tourism Association (SITA). The judges flew in from Grand Cayman to evaluate competitor skills and culinary creations at what is fast becoming a “must-do” culinary event in the Cayman Islands. A great local crowd came out to support the cause and enjoy a taste of world-class cuisine in the ultimate tropical setting.

Chef Vidyadhara Shetty, owner of Blue Cilantro Restaurant in Grand Cayman and the head of the Cayman Culinary Society, led the team of judges that included Keith Griffin and Tanya Foster. Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism Moses Kirkconnell also made the trip from Cayman Brac for the event and handed out trophies to the winners. The competition tasting room, sealed off for the judging, was set up in the dining room of the Southern Cross Club. After the winners were announced guests were allowed to sample each dish, and then they dined under the stars on the beach and danced the night away on the resort pool deck.

The competition featured five categories: local dish, soup/appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert.  First and second place winners in each category received a cash prize and a beautiful Cayman National Nambe Trophy.

Team Southern Cross Club led by Executive Chef Anu Christopher dominated the event taking home four 1st place trophies and five 2nd place prizes. This tremendous sweep was the first time the resort has received so much recognition at the event and was a huge achievement for the Team. The team’s appetizer entry, Tiger Shrimp Scotch Bonnet Peri Peri on Watermelon and Corn Salsa, won top honors for the competition, being named Grand Champion as the best dish. It was also awarded the most points in the cookoff. The team’s entrée, Ripe Plantain and Roasted Bell Pepper Stuffed Chicken Supreme, was awarded Best Cayman Dish by the Cayman Culinary Society.

“Sister Islands Cook-Off 2014 was a unique experience for all of us at the Southern Cross Club,” said Executive Chef Anu Christopher. “The Grand Championship, and all the awards that the Southern Cross Club Culinary Team received, are dedicated to the creativity, commitment and hard work of Chef Francisco, Chef Manny and Chef Luke who made a great team. This is a true reflection of our continued efforts in maintaining the high quality and consistency of the cuisine at the Southern Cross Club. I am sure that the awards will provide us with the much needed motivation to attain higher levels of hospitality through our world class cuisine.”

Winning dishes by category are as follows:

1st Place: Cayman Satay Tropical Chicken, Kristian Eyles, Southern Cross Club
2nd Place: Locally-caught Fish Fritters, Merilda Messias, Southern Cross Club

2nd Place: Pepper Jack Cheese stuffed Plop Nut Blossom Tempuras on Ponzu Broth, Southern Cross Club Culinary Team

“We are all absolutely thrilled with the resort’s successes at SCIO 2014; through the combined efforts of Kristian and Merilda in the local category and The SCC Culinary Team in the professional categories we won eleven out of the twelve awards including the highly coveted Grand Champion Award and the honorable Title of Best Cayman Dish. Team SCC should be very proud of their accomplishments at this prestigious event ” said General Manager Jennifer Mills. “Every year the SITA Cook-off committee strives to raise the standard of the cook-off to a higher level, and from the feedback we’ve received from the judges and participants, this year’s fundraiser took a giant leap forward in professionalism. I congratulate all of the Little Cayman participants and winners of the competition on a job very well done.”

Jacques Scott was the primary sponsor for the cook-off and local dive operators donated prizes for the hugely successful raffle that helped raise additional funds for SITA. Prizes included a two-night stay at the Marriott Resort, a Limited Edition Guy Harvey print, vouchers for Camana Bay, AL Thompson and other local vendors. Tortuga Liquors donated a case of rum, Jaques Scott a case of champagne and a case of the local Caybrew lager “White Tip” was also donated.

Jennifer Mills and the other organizers of the cook-off say they are committed to making it a signature culinary event and reliable fundraiser for the Sister Islands. Money raised at the cook-off will help fund environmental awareness projects for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

tripadvisorThe Southern Cross Club, Little Cayman’s original dive and fish resort, has earned TripAdvisor’s 2013 Certificate of Excellence, recognition awarded by the number of positive guest comments posted on the widely-read travel website. The resort also received the recognition in 2012. TripAdvisor® is used by millions of visitors to review resorts, restaurants, watersports operators, service providers and other tourism-related businesses around the world. Only about 10 percent of them receive this prestigious award because to qualify for the Certificate of Excellence, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers.

The Southern Cross Club was exactly what first time visitor and newlywed “flippermiller” and hergroom were looking for. “We were looking for small, safe, and relaxed, and that’s exactly what we found. We will cherish this week forever…the perfect honeymoon!” she posted on May 19, 2013.

Seasoned traveler “Chaz18551″, who wrote that he has visited many dive destinations across the world and never visited a place twice, wrote a review on June 1. “In May this year we broke with tradition and once again visited the Southern Cross Club and are glad we did as it was the equal of our first trip, if not better. Many establishments strive to make their guests feel at home but there is something magical about the formula that makes SCC what it is. Would we go a third time? Yes most certainly!”

On May 27 “Stephanie S” wrote: “We just returned from a magical 6 day stay at the Southern Cross Club to celebrate our 18th Anniversary. We are frequent visitors and this vacation exceeded our expectations.”

Tripadvisor officials say the Certificate of Excellence award gives highly rated establishments around the world the recognition they deserve say, and they want to applaud businesses like the Southern Cross Club for offering travelers a great customer experience. With today’s communication technology, the website enables travelers to quickly share their experiences and discoveries with friends and fellow travelers around the world. General Manager Jennifer Mills says these reviews are a good indication that the resort is maintaining a high level of customer service and this is a true credit to the resort staff who do a phenomenal job of making Southern Cross Club guests feel welcomed, giving them a reason to come back.

“We have returned here every year for the past 13 years…quite simply they have the best diving and resort setting in the world,” posted repeat guest “Kay P” on June 3.

“The Southern Cross Club is a diamond in the Caribbean that we hope to return to over and over again,” added “Dale C”.

“To receive this prestigious award two times in a row is an honour; to know that we received it because our guests have taken the time to write such positive reviews, makes the award very special indeed,” said Mills. “This is what we strive for at the Southern Cross Club.”

Resort Manager Neil van Niekerk agrees and credits owner Peter Hillenbrand with creating a casual and friendly atmosphere where everyone is on a first name basis and customer service is a priority. This builds a base of loyal guests who keep coming back year after year.

“Our guests are more than guests – they are our friends,” says Hillenbrand.

That’s exactly how newlywed “flippermiller” felt when she wrote in her review, “Thank you again, you treated us like we were your friends.”

The Cayman Islands are considered a prime diving destination, and those of us who live here would agree. But how many of us have only explored Grand Cayman’s bountiful waters? Little Cayman’s Bloody Bay Wall is world-famous, so perhaps it’s time we visited the Sister Islands. When you check into the Southern Cross Club, Neil Van Niekerk will be there to greet you. Neil was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and grew up with an affinity for the water. A keen surfer, the high population of sharks off the coast did not deter him, and at the age of 13 he decided to give Scuba diving a try. The visibility wasn’t terrific and the water was cold, but he completed his Open Water certification and then later attained Class IV level – more geared towards scientific and commercial diving. This was particularly useful when he worked at an aquarium for a while, determined to surround himself with fish at all times. In 2002 Neil realised that he wanted to see some new sights. He took a trip to the Cayman Islands and found employment with a local company on that same vacation. He worked at Red Sail Sports’ Hyatt location for four years, and then Tortuga Divers for three, so of course he was here for Hurricane Ivan, enjoying no power or water for 80 days of the aftermath. In 2007 he went off to Turks and Caicos, but Cayman was harder to shake off than he’d thought, and he returned to join the staff at Reef Divers in Little Cayman and then the Southern Cross Club where he has been assistant manager for the last 5 years. It may be small over there, but it’s got loads of character, friendly people, no traffic jams, no crime and dive sites that are beyond spectacular. Little Cayman is also the only place that has an organised community cull of Lionfish on a weekly basis. All the divemasters get together and actively catch them, passing on data and specimens to the CCMI (Central Caribbean Marine Institute). Right now they are conducting a population density study to see how effective the culling process is in lowering the number of Lionfish, which is vital to reef protection for years to come. Now a Master Scuba Diver Trainer capable of training students in specialty diving such as nitrox and navigation, Neil fills his days with new and exciting sights just off the shores of Little Cayman.
